Pottery by Bill and Gean
We use porcelain and brown stoneware for our pottery and sculptures. Our work is mostly collaborative. Bill usually throws the forms on the wheel and then Gean carves and glazes them. Occasionally we will each do our own pieces from start to finish and this usually applies to the more sculptural work.
After the pieces are completely dry, we'll fire them to about 1944 degrees Fahrenheit. This firing usually takes about 12 hours to reach temperature. After a cooling period of about 24 hours, we'll take the pieces out and glaze them. Gean likes to spray the glazes on since it gives a more even finish. Finally, we'll fire the glazed pieces to about 2291 (cone 6) degrees. The glaze firing takes about 12 to 15 hours to reach temperature. The kiln cools down slowly and about 36 hours later we can take out the finished work.
